The 7-Step Morning Routine That Helped Me Build a Billion-Dollar Brand

At one time in my life, I'd be at home for days each morning because I was lazy and cold to dress and put an outfit on.

When I was a kid I did not show any first signs of any promise. My mother who was my greatest advocate, slowly believed I was going to fail in my life.

Today, I'm an entrepreneur with a lot of success. I founded Quest Nutrition, a business of Quest Nutrition, which was valued at more than a billion dollars. I've also been able to establish the Impact Theory the company whose content, together with my program Inside Quest, has been watched over 160 million times.

How could an unmotivated kid with no promise, in the beginning, defy the odds and succeed?

It began by rebuilding my self-image by shifting from a fixed mindset to a growth perspective. When I stopped worrying about being the best and began to care solely about finding the right answer faster than others I was able to create a solid foundation for endless development. After that, another crucial element to my success was the way I spent my time, specifically during the morning time.

Here are the behaviors I developed back then -- and continue to practice to this day -to keep my mind in the right place to be able to play the full-contact game of entrepreneurialism:

1. Sleep.

My morning routine actually started in the evening, before.

I've not used an alarm clock to get up (with some exceptions) for more than 10 years. There is a minimum amount of sleep and if you're not getting the amount, then your productivity starts to decrease -- enough that you can evaluate the decline with the test of your cognitive abilities.

Therefore, the first step is to consider sleeping as an important task you'll be doing all day. If you must get to bed around eight p.m. to have the rest you require, then go to bed around 8 p.m. I wake up easily anywhere between 3 and 4 a.m. So getting up early is essential.

2. Get your body in shape.

After I wake up I use the moment of awakening to trigger me to get active. I exercise every day However, I'm not one of those people who enjoy working out.

However, I wake up, get out of bed, and head directly to my gym. I'm blessed to have a gym at my house, which means that the time between waking up to working out is about 10 minutes.

The ability to develop discipline is one of the most important factors you require to master in order to succeed. Being successful involves numerous things you don't want to complete, but you're going to be required to do them nonetheless.

You'll have to push yourself even when all your senses tell you to stop. You'll need to get up and get up there. You'll need to be working on the weekend so that your friends are having a good time. You'll have to work when you'd prefer to play video games or binge watching Netflix.

Discipline will be the key to being able to achieve that goal however, you'll require a space that permits you to develop the discipline. My personal favorite is the gym, which is one of the main reasons I exercise in order to improve my discipline and build respect for myself by being consistent and doing an effort to do something that doesn't bring me any satisfaction in itself.

3. Work out your mind.

It's not enough just to exercise your body. You also need to train your mind as well.

For me, in fact, the body is an expression that the brain. After I have finished exercising, I do meditation. My reason to do this is to improve my concentration and also to master the art of quickly relaxing my mind.

We live in a frantic world that is filled with stress and distractions. We love the power to speed up our brains and lives, but it's essential to be able to slow down the pace of our lives as well. It is equally essential to understand how to relax. It is essential to develop this ability.

The length of time I spend in meditation varies on how anxious or stressed I am, however generally, it's between 20 and 30 minutes. I employ the "just breathe" technique, in which I try to relax my mind and breathe deeply.

When I first started to meditate I was unable to convince myself to do at least five or ten minutes. The feeling is now a joy so much that I often stay until my legs begin to relax after being across my legs.

4. Thinkitate.

A single amazing aspect of meditation is that it can put your brain in a state of alpha waves. This is believed to be the most imaginative of brain states. That's the way I feel.

When I'm done meditation, and before the alpha state is over and I'm back to my normal activities I cease trying to calm my thoughts and instead shift them to tackling one of my biggest issues.

I refer to this method as "Thinkitating." I consider this to be an effective method because, when you're in this frame of mind, I can see that I create more original and innovative connections, which allow me to find imaginative solutions to issues that would otherwise have seemed impossible.

5. Read.

I strive to read each day. I believe that the most crucial mathematical equation is I = I = IO (Ideas in = ideas out). The majority of my work time gets recorded for each day. This is why I've needed to find ways to make sure that I can find enough time to read.

One method is to be able to focus on what I refer to as "transitional moments" -- brushing my teeth, dressing and cooking dinner, etc. A very appropriate occasion for me is to stroll my dogs. It's about 30 minutes that I typically follow with my breakfast in the morning. This gives me about 45-60 minutes of uninterrupted reading time.

In addition, there are all the little sneaky moments I capture whenever I can. Because I prefer to set aside time to really get into my reading and enjoy the experience, too.

6. Make a "most important things" list.

I have a list of the most crucial elements my business requires to be successful. When I get ready at my desk, the very first step is to go through the list. I do my best to take immediate action regarding every item on the list that I can. And when I don't do something three times in three days, I remove it from the list because my actions suggest that it's not really important.

In general, I place the most important items right at the top so that I don't fall into the trap of dealing with items that aren't on my priority list simply because it's the first item on the list.

7. Do not respond to emails.

In fact, checking your email is a major mistake in time management. This is, in my opinion, an infraction of your responsibilities as a business person.

If you don't check your email before making the necessary decisions for the requirements of your business you're acknowledging that others know more about what you need to be doing than you do.

I've learned to avoid emails until all that must be completed is accomplished. I've generally worked between 5 to seven hours of work before I even check emails for the very first time. Also, I am not to spend more than an hour checking my email each day.

The routines that I incorporate into my daily routine are essential in completing my tasks and staying on the right track. Habits, in general, are, according to me the most important element of achievement.

I strongly recommend that you start a routine for their mornings that addresses both your physical and mental well-being as well as ensures you're taking all the necessary steps to succeed in whatever you're working on. It is my hope that your morning routine will help you just as it has helped me.
